Hyundai Canada and its charitable Hyundai Hope on Wheels organization have made a donation to a children’s cancer care centre in Halifax, N.S.

Hyundai donated $250,000 to IWK Foundation, the fundraising arm of IWK Health.

IWK Health is a women’s and children’s hospital and trauma centre. It’s also part of the Atlantic Provinces Hematology/Oncology Network, which identifies ways to best share hematology/oncology care for pediatric patients throughout Atlantic Canada.

As one of two Atlantic Canada and Maritime pediatric tertiary hospitals, most child patients with cancer undergo diagnosis and initial treatment at IWK Health. The facility also works with local hospitals to help provide patients and their families ongoing care and followup as close to home as possible.

On average, IWK Health gets about 3,500 hematology/oncology clinic visits and 500 hematology/oncology hospital admissions per year, and its long-term followup clinic follows about 340 childhood cancer survivors per year.

“We are so grateful for Hyundai Hope on Wheels’ generous donation to support pediatric oncology and hematology care at IWK Health,” said Jennifer Gillivan, president and CEO of IWK Foundation, in a news release. “Our region’s sickest patients come to the IWK for care, and your incredible support will help bring hope to families facing a life-altering diagnosis. This partnership will help ensure our children and youth have the best chance for a healthy future. There is no greater gift to give.”

Hyundai Hope on Wheels has committed to donating $4 million to pediatric oncology centres in Canada in 2025, its first year of operation.
