Toyota is bringing back the C-HR coupe-like SUV, but this time it will be electric.

Toyota estimates the small SUV in front-wheel-drive form will have a driving range up to 500 kilometres.

Toyota hasn’t announced pricing yet, but if Toyota prices it low enough, it could potentially be the cheapest electric vehicle in Canada with a range of at least 500 kilometres. That title currently belongs to the Chevrolet Equinox EV.

The C-HR will debut in Canada as a 2026 model, and is expected to be available here sometime next year.

It will arrive in two trims. There’s the front-wheel-drive SE and the all-wheel-drive XSE.

Supplying energy to both models is a 77-kW lithium-ion battery.

The front-wheel-drive model has 221 hp and the aforementioned estimated driving range up to 500 kilometres.

The all-wheel-drive model has 338 hp and an estimated driving range of 465 kilometres. Toyota said this version could sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.

Charging options

The C-HR comes with a standard North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, giving it access to Tesla Supercharer fast-charging stations.

Toyota estimates that with Level 3 fast charging, the C-HR should recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in about half an hour, under ideal conditions.

At-home Level 2 charging should be relatively quick too as C-HR comes with an 11-kW on-board AC charger.

Proportions

The C-HR is built on the company’s e-TNGA battery-electric platform, the same that also underpins the recently updated Toyota bZ.

Toyota said the vehicle maintains a low centre of gravity thanks to the underfloor-mounted battery pack. The battery pack is surrounded by a cross-framing structure to increase rigidity.

The crossover SUV is 4,520 mm long, 1,870 mm wide and 1,595 mm tall. The wheelbase is 2,750 mm long.

Despite its coupe-like silhouette, Toyota said the C-HR has a generous 720 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats.

Available wheels measure 18 and 20 inches.

The C-HR comes with standard fabric/SofTex eight-way power driver seat and six-way manual passenger seat, heated front seats and heated steering wheel, front and rear parking assist with automatic braking, blind spot monitor and more.

The upgraded all-wheel-drive model replaces the seats with SofTex and synthetic suede trim, eight-way power passenger seat, driver memory seat and assist features such as digital rear-view mirror with HomeLink, traffic jam assist, lane change assist and panoramic view monitor.

Optional features on the all-wheel-drive model include 20-inch gun metal-finished wheels, panoramic moonroof, rear heated seats and a nine-speaker JBL premium audio system.
