Toyota is looking back to the fun days of Japanese hatchbacks of the ’80s – just don’t expect ’80s prices.

The automaker announced the release of the 2026 Corolla Hatchback FX edition, which is inspired by the 1987 Corolla FX16.

Only 150 will be available in Canada.

The new variant is based on the existing SE grade of the Corolla Hatchback, but adds some fun ’80s-inspired visual cues.

The car gets a black vented sport wing, which improves aerodynamics and adds some flair. It rides on 18-inch gloss white-finished alloy wheels with black lug nuts

There’s a rear badge that’s said to be reminiscent of the FX16.

And, the car is available in Canada only in white.

Unfortunately, one desired element that was common in ’80s cars, a manual transmission, is not available in the 2026 car.

The car is powered by a 2-litre direct-injection four-cylinder engine producing 169 hp and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. Peak torque arrives at 4,800 rpm. City-highway combined fuel economy is estimated at 6.8 L/100 km.

Interior

On the interior, the Corolla Hatchback FX gets new black sport touring seats with suede inserts and orange stitching.

Orange stitching continues on the steering wheel and shifter boot.

The steering wheel is leather-wrapped and heated.

There’s a seven-inch digital gauge cluster that can be customized for a driver’s preferences.

An eight-speaker JBL audio system is standard, as is a wireless phone charger.
