Aston Martin has taken the top off its newly launched flagship coupe to create what it calls the fastest front-engine convertible in the world.

The automaker launched the Vanquish Volante.

The two-seat convertible is powered by the same 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine that motivates the Vanquish coupe. It produces 835 PS and 1,000 Nm of torque, which translates to North American figures of 823 hp and 737 lb.-ft. of torque.

The top speed is reported to be 214 mph (344 km/h).

Zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) is said to arrive in 3.4 seconds.

Aston Martin calls the car the crown jewel in a model lineage of 60 years, as the original Short Chassis Volante debuted in 1965.

“For 60 years, Aston Martin Volantes have defined the art of elegant, sporting, open-top motoring,” said Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark in a news release. “With its stunning looks and outstanding V12 engine producing more power than any other front-engine production car on sale, Vanquish Volante has taken this philosophy to an entirely new level. At Aston Martin we are proud to be doing such justice to our heritage while, as the unprecedented performance of the Vanquish Volante shows, keeping our eyes firmly focused on the future.”

Powertrain

The first Aston Martin fitted with a V12 engine was the DB7 Vantage, available both as a coupe and Volante, launched in 2000. The latest V12 motor has nearly double the power of the original.

The newest power plant pumps out its maximum torque between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm.

The motor sends power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ZF transmission, which is located within the rear axle for optimal weight distribution. The car has the same E-differential as the coupe, which can transition from fully open to fully locked within 135 milliseconds.

The benefit of this E-diff, combined with an electronic stability system, is that dynamic capability is improved for greater agility and low and medium speed cornering and it allows for greater control in oversteer and high-speed lane changes, Aston Martin said.

“The drive to ensure Vanquish Volante delivered the same class leading performance as the Vanquish Coupe meant that, from inception, the engineering team worked on both Coupe and Volante simultaneously, allowing us to retain the dynamic capabilities and character of Vanquish Coupe with no compromise upon removing the roof,” said Simon Newton, director of vehicle performance and attributes, in the release. “Optimizations made to the body structure combined with specific chassis tuning ensures that Vanquish Volante makes the same headlines as Coupe for its outrageous performance and capability, now with the extra enjoyment of roof-down driving.”

The convertible has its own suspension setup to account for the different weight distribution. Aston Martin said the car’s Bilstein DTX dampers provide an outstanding level of wheel control in each drive mode and provide a greater distinction between the different modes than has been possible before.
