Stellantis is getting into the hands-free autonomous driving game.
The automaker announced the launch of what it calls STLA AutoDrive 1.0, its first automated driving system developed in-house.
The system would provide SAE Level 3 functionality at speeds up to 60 km/h, which includes hands-free and eyes-off driving, event at night and in poor weather.
The system is also designed to evolve and has the potential of operating at speeds up to 95 km/h and in off-road conditions.
The technology also includes Level 2 (hands on) and Level 2+ (hands off, eyes on) capabilities at higher speeds. These features include adaptive cruise control and lane centring functions.
Stellantis said this is ideal for commuters in dense urban areas, allowing them to take a break from driving with some non-driving tasks.
“Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority,” said Ned Curic, Stellantis chief engineering and technology officer, in a news release. “By handling routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.”

The automaker said the system is designed to notify the driver when it is available for use when traffic and environmental conditions are right. The driver would activate the system with the push of a button. The AutoDrive would then take over the vehicle, maintaining safe distances from other cars, adjusting speed, steering and braking based on traffic flow.
Drivers are required to remain seated, belted and ready to assume control when prompted.
Stellantis said the system is ready for deployment. It complies with applicable regulations in supported markets and it respects local laws on drive conduct, such as phone use restrictions.
There was no mention when the system could be deployed in Canada.
