The BMW Group showing off a new panoramic screen that will be coming to all new models from the end of 2025.
The new BMW Panoramic Vision is referred to as the centrepiece of the latest version of the BMW iDrive operating system, which runs on BMW Operating System X. The system was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2025 in Las Vegas.
The automaker says the one showcased at CES is a close-to-production version.
So what is it?
Essentially, it’s a head-up display that runs from the A pillar to the A pillar across the entire bottom of the windshield. It’s placed on a black printed surface in the lower section of the windshield.
It displays important driving information, projected directly in the driver’s line of sight, on the steering-wheel side of the screen.
Drivers can personalize the content in the central and right-hand areas of the display.
Furthermore, there is a new and optional BMW 3D head-up display above the panoramic screen, which displays integrated navigation and automated driving information directly in the driver’s field of vision.
BMW says the panoramic screen and head-up display present a co-ordinated display.
“High tech meets highly intuitive operation – a quarter of a century of pioneering work and technological leadership in operating concepts has been channeled into the new BMW Panoramic iDrive,” said Frank Weber, member of the board of management of BMW AG, responsible for development, in a news release.
“The foundations are provided by the new BMW Operating System X. With this advance, we are giving one of the world’s best and most comprehensive infotainment systems even greater capability and once again setting the industry benchmark in multimodal interaction. Starting with the first series-produced Neue Klasse model at the end of this year, the new BMW Panoramic iDrive will form an integral part of all future BMW models.”
The automaker says the BMW Operating System X, which replaces BMW Operating System 9, is developed in-house and built on the Android Open Source Project. It is said to offer greater update and upgrade capability, making it both useful for the future and is backward compatible.
Stephan Durach, senior vice president, connected company, BMW Group, called BMW Operating System X a large technological leap forward.
“It offers intuitive operation, emotionally engaging experiences and specific personalization. The new BMW iDrive with Operating System X demonstrates the potential of a software-defined vehicle,” he said in a news release.
