It appears vehicle sales are rebounding following the pandemic lows that dogged the industry.
Toyota Canada Inc. reported its best sales year on record with 238,933 Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in 2024. This bests the company’s previous sales record of 237,091, set in 2019.
The Lexus division was actually down slightly from 2023 as the luxury brand sold 29,704 vehicles in 2024, which is 4.8 per cent less than its record year of 2023, but good enough to make it the second-best year for Lexus in Canada.
The Toyota division sold 209,229 in 2024, which is 6.6 per cent better than in 2023, but only good enough for its second-best year as well. In 2019, the Toyota division sold 211,551 vehicles.
While 2024 was the second-best-selling year for both brands individually in Canada, combined it’s good enough for a new sales record for the company.
Electrified vehicle sales represented 48.6 per cent of Toyota’s total vehicle sales and 53.3 per cent of total Lexus sales, for a combined total of 49.2 per cent for the company. Electrified vehicles include battery-electric vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell electric vehicles.
The company’s top-selling model was the RAV4, which saw 77,556 sales, up 3.8 per cent year-over-year and a new annual record. Toyota points out that makes the RAV4 the top-selling non-pickup truck vehicle in Canada.
The RAV4 is assembled in Canada as are the Lexus NX and RX models. More than half of all Lexus vehicles sold in Canada in 2024 were assembled in Canada.
The company assembled a total of 533,566 vehicles in Canada in 2024.
“On behalf of Toyota Canada, I’d like to thank our customers for their continued confidence and trust in Toyota Canada, for this record year, but also over our 60 years of Toyota presence in this country,” said Cyril Dimitris, president and CEO of Toyota Canada, in a news release. “I’d also like to thank and recognize our dealers and their dealership staff for their commitment to supporting our Canadian customers.”
Toyota Canada Inc. has a network of 287 Toyota and Lexus dealerships across the country and has sold more than six million vehicles in Canada over its 60 years of operation.
