Future auto mechanics who get their training at Centennial College will learn how to repair electrified vehicles.

The Toronto-based college announced its School of Transportation is adding EV/hybrid courses to its Automotive – Motive Power Technician program starting with the fall 2024 semester.

The move is intended to help students stay ahead of the curve at a time when electric vehicles and hybrids are being sold in large numbers in Canada.

“We are ensuring that new electric and hybrid vehicle technology is integrated with traditional vehicle systems in the classroom, just as it has been integrated together inside of today’s cars and trucks,” said Christopher Muir, professor, EV/Continuing Education, School of Transportation, in a news releaes. “We are building on the foundations of standard automotive training by teaching students how to work on high-voltage systems, covering everything from safety to software.”

Students in the program get hands-on experience working on a fleet of more than a dozen electrified vehicles, including a 2018 Chevrolet Bolt, 2022 Toyota Prius and 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning.

The two-year program is based at the school’s Ashtonbee Campus in Scarborough.

An optional co-op helps graduates fill requirements for Level 1 and Level 2 automotive service technician in-school apprenticeship training. Graduates are required to complete several steps, including on-the-job apprenticeship training and Level 3 in-school apprenticeship training, in order to become licensed automotive service technicians in Ontario.

Centennial’s School of Transportation is the largest on-site transportation training facility in Canada. It’s automotive technician program.
