Porsche has released details of its newest 911 Carrera T, which joins the latest generation of 911 sports cars.

The Carrera T can be summed up as a Carrera, but lighter, and slots in the vehicle hierarchy between the Carrera and Carrera S.

Unlike other 911s, this one is only available with a six-speed manual transmission. And, for the first time, this latest Carrera T is available as a cabriolet, along with the coupe model, as before.

Porsche says this newest Carrera T focuses on agility, lightweight construction and an emotive soundscape. It’s actually slightly slower than a standard Carrera, but has a greater focus on being a purist car.

In its lightest configuration, with full bucket seats, the coupe weighs 1,478 kilograms, which is more than 40 kilograms less than the current Carrera.

Porsche says the Carrera T benefits from various weight-reducing measures, including lightweight windows and reduced insulation.

But there’s more than just less weight.

The chassis gets its own tuning, there’s an auto-blip function for down-shifting and a sports exhaust system is standard.

The Sport Chrono Package, which includes a Track Precision app, is standard, as is rear-axle steering. The steering ratio is more direct on the front axle for improved handling, Porsche says, and lateral acceleration is generally faster and the steering is more direct.

The PASM adaptive sports suspension, another standard item, is 10 mm lower and has its own sporty tuning for a more agile car.

The Carrera T comes with Carrera S light alloy wheels measuring 20 inches in front and 21 in back.

There are a few styling cues that separate the Carrera T from other 911s, including a sticker with a shift pattern logo on the triangular side rear windows. The car also gets the spoiler lip from the 911 Carrera GTS.

There are other items that distinguish the model from other 911s as well, but we’ll skip to the performance figures.

The Carrera T gets the same 3-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder boxer engine as the standard Carrera with 388 hp.

In terms of performance, Porsche says the coupe will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and the cabriolet in 4.7 seconds. The top speed is 295 km/h in the coupe and 293 km/h in the cabriolet.

The standard Carrera, which comes with an eight-speed PDK transmission, actually accelerates quicker, with a time of 4.1 seconds in the coupe (294 km/h top speed) and 4.3 seconds (291 km/h top speed) in the cabriolet.

The Carrera T cabriolet has a starting MSRP of $165,300, which after fees, destination charges and luxury tax comes in at around $185,000.
