Ford has unveiled an all-new Expedition full-size SUV, which is launching for the 2025 model year.

The large mover of people is available in standard length the extended-length Expedition MAX, and new for the latest model is an off-road-capable Tremor trim.

“For Expedition customers, family is at the centre of everything they do,” said Trevor Scott, general manager of Ford Utilities, in a news release. “We spent more than 1,100 hours talking with customers about their everyday lives. And with those insights we’ve rethought and redesigned Expedition to help customers make the most of their precious time with family and to make life easier – before, during and after every trip they make.”

The fifth-generation Expedition features a new design, more technology, improved cargo storage and more.

The Active, King Ranch and Platinum trims are powered by a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine with 400 hp and 480 lb.-ft. of torque.

Standard on the Tremor and available on the Platinum models is a high output 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine with 440 hp and 510 lb.-ft. of torque.

The SUV features exterior zone lighting, to help you light the area around the vehicle, a nifty trick for camping and the like.

The SUV also features a new split gate design combining a liftgate and tailgate. Three-quarters of the rear door lifts up and the lower quarter folds down. The tailgate also can support up to 500 pounds. There’s an available tailgate seatback, which can transform the tailgate into a serving table. There are also power outlets in the cargo area.

When your hands are full, just stand at the back of the vehicle with the key fob on you, and the split gate will automatically open.

The console between the front seats is powered and can slide back eight inches to reveal a secure storage area. Sliding it backward also gives second-row passengers easier access to the console, where they can access audio and climate controls and cup holders.

The third-row seats can fold 40/20/40, so that if you are hauling long items like skis, you can still seat two people in the third row.

Tech

The Expedition features a 24-inch panoramic display, which replaces a traditional gauge cluster, and is positioned higher, near the lower edge of the windshield, so that drivers are looking at it over the steering wheel, not through it, and therefore having it in better view as they look at the road ahead.

A new Ford Digital Experience includes things such as Wi-Fi hotspot capability, Google Plan apps and Google Maps. Voice commands are via Google Assistant, or an available Alexa Built-in.

Ford BlueCruise hands-free highway driving will also be available. This is a connected feature, so you’ll need to subscribe to get it.

The Expedition also features a host of driver safety and convenience features.

Tremor trim

The Tremor variant is described as the most off-road-capable Expedition ever.

This model gets 10.6-inch ground clearance and rides on 33-inch all-terrain tires.

It features a retuned suspension and electric power-assisted steering systems, running boards and a front skid plate, inspired by the Raptor, embedded off-road auxiliary lights behind the grille, and underbody protection for the front axle, transfer case and fuel tank.

To help the driver through their off-road journey, there is Rock Crawl mode, trail turn assist and trail one-pedal.

Towing

The Expedition includes a number of technology features to help owners haul the things they need to haul.

The Pro Trailer Hitch Assist uses the rear camera and corner radars to align the hitch with the trailer coupler at the touch of a button, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist lets the camera to track the trailer position as the driver packs up.

The Expedition has a 7,000-pound towing capacity or 9,600 pounds with a weight distributing hitch.
