Mercedes-AMG One driver one-ups his own Nürburgring lap record

Driver Maro Engel beat the production car lap record around the Green Hell, which he set with the same car two years earlier.

The driver of the fastest street-legal production car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife race track has topped his own record, Mercedes-Benz announced.

Driver Maro Engel hit the track in the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar two years after setting the production car lap record at the Green Hell and beat his own time by more than five seconds.

He came in with an official time of 6:29:090. It’s the first a road car beat the six-and-a-half-minute mark at the track.

Engel’s previous record, set in October 2022, was 6:35:183.

So what was different this time around?

“Two years ago, the conditions were not ideal, and some sections of the track were still a little damp. We knew we could do more, and we wanted to show that. Today we were able to demonstrate the maximum potential of the AMG One. Many thanks to the whole team from Affalterbach for the trust they’ve placed in me. It was a great pleasure and honour to be able to drive this record lap with such a unique car,” Engel said in an Oct. 2 news release.

The automaker said meticulous preparation and ideal track conditions were necessary for this new record run. Temperatures were 15 C and the asphalt was dry and had a temperature of 20 C.

Mercedes-Benz points out Engel had to make use of the car’s hybrid powertrain to get the best results, particularly as the track is more than 20 kilometres long and electric energy recuperation needs to be considered when pushing the car. In some instances, the drivers took his foot off the accelerator pedal earlier than he normally would in order to get the most out of the car’s four-stage energy flow control system.

“We’ve held the record for road vehicles for almost two years now. But at AMG, we always want to push the boundaries of what is possible to the maximum or even push them a little further,” said Michael Schiebe, chairman of Mercedes-AMG, in the release. “That’s why we have once again demonstrated what is possible with the unique AMG One. The entire team has been rewarded for its efforts and commitment. I’m proud of this determined team effort and of this fantastic record time. Once again, we’ve impressively demonstrated the spirit and expertise of AMG.”

The Mercedes-AMG One features a hybrid powertrain that comes directly from Formula 1. The car packs 1,063 PS (1,048 hp) and has a top speed capped at 352 km/h. The AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system features a hybrid-driven rear axle and electronically driven front axle with torque vectoring.

Can you still buy this car (that is if you can afford it)? The answer is no, at least not directly from the automaker, as the limited production run of the AMG One is reportedly sold out.
