There’s the estimated driving range for electric vehicles and then there’s the real world range.

Volkswagen’s team in Switzerland showed you can get more – not less – than what the worldwide harmonized light vehicle test procedure (WLTP) suggests.

The team, with project lead Felix Egolf at the wheel, drove the Volkswagen ID.7 Pro S through an area near Zurich a distance of 794 kilometres on a single charge, beating the car’s estimated range of 709 kilometres. There were still two kilometres of range displaying when the team finished the drive.

The journey was conducted on an 81-kilometre circuit through the Zug metropolitan area over 15 hours and 42 minutes, driving at an average speed of 51 km/h. Volkswagen says the terrain included main roads, motorway (highway) sections and country roads with hilly transitions.

VW pointed out that the version driven was not the most energy efficient model of the ID.7 Pro S as it included optional features including the Comfort package, IQ.Drive assist systems package, Plus exterior package and a heat pump. The automaker estimates this version would have a WLTP estimated range of 700 kilometres.

The ID.7 is a midsize sedan with a fastback silhouette and a long wheelbase and a spacious interior. Volkswagen calls it its most refined EV yet.

The ID.7 Pro S, which was used for the test through Switzerland, has an 86-kWh (net) battery and a combined WLTP consumption of 16.2 to 13.6 kWh/100 km.

The ID.7 is available in Europe but has yet to be introduced to the Canadian and U.S. markets. A launch date has not been provided. More details on the vehicle are available at vw.ca.
