Toyota is changing up the naming convention for its plug-in hybrids.
Starting with the 2025 model years, the Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime will drop the Prime from their names, instead going with the names of Prius Plug-in Hybrid and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. Both models will also wear a PHEV badge on the rear.
“Many Canadians already appreciate the advanced power, driving fun, and remarkable efficiency of Toyota’s flagship plug-in hybrid vehicles – and with a slight change of name, we’re ready to help even more drivers embrace PHEVs as they seek to live more sustainable lives,” said Cyril Dimitris, vice president, Toyota Canada Inc., in a news release.
“The 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid and 2025 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid offer Canadian drivers a no-compromise approach to electrification. These great vehicles also demonstrate Toyota’s belief in designing and engineering practical, real-world solutions that support our Beyond Zero commitment – to make a net positive impact on our planet and society.”
The 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid model features a powertrain that consists of a 2-litre gasoline engine and an electric motor-generator system with a total system output of 220 hp. Electric driving range is rated at up to 72 kilometres.
The 2025 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid features a powertrain with a 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle engine with high torque electric motors generating a total of 302 hp. Electric driving range is rated up to 68 kilometres.
