If you drive a recent Volvo vehicle, you may soon notice a change in your infotainment system.
Volvo Cars announced its latest infotainment system, which was created for the all-electric EX90 and EX30 models, is coming to its other vehicles as well, including those already on the road.
Sometime during 2025, some 2.5 million vehicles around the world will receive an upgrade to their infotainment system. This will be done on vehicles built as early as 2020.
The upgraded infotainment system will be delivered to customers via an over-the-air update.
“We plan to gradually roll out this upgrade during the year and believe this is one of the most comprehensive infotainment updates by any car maker to date. This rollout is in line with our strategy to make our cars better over time with regular over-the-air software updates,” a news release from the automaker said.
If your vehicle also has Google built-in, it will also received an upgraded layout, free of charge.
The updated system presents the most common apps and controls on the home screen, with the intention that drivers will need fewer taps on the screen to get to the features they use most often. These commonly used apps include maps, media and phone.
You also won’t have to leave Google Maps to access media.
A contextual bar will change depending on the situation. For example, if you’re driving slowly, an icon for outside cameras will appear so you can use the cameras, if needed, to get around tight spaces.
The update will be on C40, XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, XC60, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country and XC90 vehicles with an Android operating system from as early as 2020.
“Our new-generation user experience will deliver a significant improvement in customer experience and is an important step in our journey to delivery human-centric technology solutions to our customers,” said Erik Severinson, chief product and strategy officer at Volvo Cars, in a news release. “We’ll continuously and seamlessly adapt the user experience to match the needs of our customers through new and enhanced features that are delivered through over-the-air updates, to improve your car – and your experience – over time.”
