Audi has unveiled an all-new Q5 as well as its sportier variant, the SQ5, both of which will continue to burn fuel.

“The Audi Q5 has been our most successful and most important SUV model in the midsize class for more than 15 years. The new edition is a further development of its proven characteristics,” said Gernot Döllner, chairman of the board of management of Audi AG, in a news release. “As the second model in our new generation of highly efficient combustion engines, it marks the next important step in the rejuvenation of our portfolio. I am certain that the new Audi Q5, as a sporty all-rounder with a dynamic SUV design, will continue its success story.”

The third-generation Q5 is Audi’s first SUV on its Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) platform, which features partially electrified combustion engines.

For the upcoming release, the SUV gets mild-hybrid technology, while future versions are expected to get plug-in hybrid versions. The Q5 utilizes what Audi calls MHEV plus, which goes beyond the electric capabilities of most mild-hybrid vehicles. In its case, the Q5 is capable of maneuvering and parking on purely electric power to a limited extent.

The SUV is launching with a variety of engines, each one equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and MHEV plus. The entry-level engine is a 2-litre turbo with 201 hp and 251 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels and quattro all-wheel drive is available.

The SQ5 features a 3-litre turbo V6 with 266 hp and 406 lb.-ft. of torque.

There’s also a diesel model available, at least in Europe, with 201 hp and 296 lb.-ft. of torque.

The new SUV also gets a ton of standard and available technology.

Among the tech features, the Q5 uses an Android Automotive operating system, which features over-the-air updates, with a multitude apps available.

The driver gets an 11.9-inch screen, plus there’s a 14.5-inch touch display in the centre and an available 10.9-inch passenger display. The passenger display features active privacy mode, which prevents the driver from seeing the screen (they only see a black screen from their angle).

An available Bang & Olufsen sound system features 16 loudspeakers with 685 watts of power. The system includes Symphoria technology, which adds sound dimensions giving the sound width, depth and height and creates a feeling of spaciousness in the car.

An available head-up display is configurable to display a variety of information, such as speed, navigation, media data, assistance systems and more.

The Q5 comes with the latest generation of driver assistance features, including rear parking aid with distance display, cruise control and speed limiter, lane departure warning, efficiency assistant and attention and drowsiness assistant, which are standard from market launch.

Other features are available. Among them is the Adaptive Driving Assistant plus, which uses map data and swarm data from other vehicles calculated in the cloud to optimize traffic sign recognition and assist with acceleration, maintaining speed and distance as well as lane guidance. Another one is the Active Front Assist, which combines four assistance functions: Front Emergency Brake Assist, Evasion Assist, Turn Assist, and Front Cross Traffic Assist. Other assistance systems available include traffic sign-based cruise control, Park Assist plus and Rear Turn Assist.

The Q5 family of vehicles will be produces in in San José Chiapa, Mexico.

Canadian market details aren’t yet available. The model will launch in Europe in the first quarter of 2025 with a starting price of 52,300 euros ($78,017 Canadian, as of Sept. 1, 2024).
