Volkswagen’s modern take on its beloved Type 1 Microbus is coming to Canada.

VW announced the ID. Buzz electric vehicle will be available in North America for the first time, with an expected Canadian arrival in late 2024.

The North American version of the ID. Buzz features a longer wheelbase and a more powerful motor than the standard model available in Europe. The long wheelbase allows for three rows of seating with seating up to seven occupants. It also features new interior colours.

Two versions will be available in Canada to start.

The 1st Edition features a rear-wheel-drive setup with a high-voltage battery with a 91-kWh (gross) or 86-kWh (net) capacity powering a 282-hp motor. It has a Canadian MSRP of $77,495, which doesn’t include fees, levies and taxes.

Then there’s the 1st Edition 4MOTION model, which features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with the same voltage battery and 335 hp of power. This model also features second-row captain’s chairs, reducing the seating capacity to six from seven.

“In the USA, Canada, and Europe, the VW bus has embodied a unique attitude on life for decades,” said Lars Krause, VW board member, in a news release. “The picture of the legendary T1 Lightbus in Woodstock is unforgettable. The DNA of this symbol of freedom lives on in our ID. Buzz. It is of utmost importance to us that we can now offer the people of North America a modern, all-electric new edition with the ID. Buzz in an iconic design.”

The ID. Buzz will be available in a variety of exterior colours, as well in several interior upholstery/colour options.

The ID. Buzz with the long wheelbase measures 4,962 mm in length, and has 2,469 litres of storage space.

Estimated range is 377 kilometres on the rear-wheel-drive model and 373 kilometres on the 4MOTION model.
