Pagani has gone old-school – in the classy kind of way – with its latest hypercar.

The Pagani Utopia Roadster, based on the Utopia Coupe, has been announced, with an official public unveiling scheduled from Aug. 9 to 18 in Monterey, California.

The car sports a 6-litre V12 engine, without any electrification, which the automaker says is “a tribute to the enduring beauty of mechanical purity.”

Furthermore, the car is available with an exposed-gate seven-speed manual transmission, almost unheard of in today’s hypercar era as automatics shift quicker – yet here it is. (The quick-shifting automatic is available as well).

The interior is conspicuous for its lack of a central iPad-style multimedia screen; instead the car features artfully designed analogue dials and various physical knobs and buttons, another throwback to a bygone time. The driver does get a digital display at the gauge cluster, sandwiched between an analogue tachometer and speedometer.

Safety is upped with technology, including Pirelli Cyber Tyre, an innovative sensory system that enables the tires to communicate with the car.

Pagani says California was the chosen as the car’s debut site because it’s one of the American states with the strictest safety and emissions standards. Pagani further says the car demonstrates the automaker’s commitment to comply with international homologation criteria so that its cars can be driven all over the world.

Performance

The car weighs 2,822 pounds (1,280 kilograms) just like the coupe. Pagani says it was able to keep the roadster’s weight down with a monocoque chassis completely redesigned to optimize rigidity and resistance without having to use heavy reinforcements.

The car also utilizes more than 40 formulas of composite materials, beyond carbon fibre, such as Carbo-Titanium HP62-G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62, all developed by Pagani Automobili.

For the engine build, Pagani collaborated with Mercedes-AMG. The engine is said to be light and compact and each engine is entirely assembled by a single craftsperson.

The engine produces 811 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed transmission. The manual transmission is compact and positioned transversely behind the engine and connected to a light and adjustable triple-disc clutch.

Pirelli is supplying tires exclusively designed for Pagani, which feature advanced sensor technology on the inside of the tread. The system relays information from the tires to the vehicle’s stability control systems to ensure maximum performance and safety, Pagani says.

The wheels measure 21 inches at the front and 22 at the rear. The car comes with P Zero Corsa and P Zero Winter tires and optional P Zero Trofeo RS tires, all developed for the Utopia.

The car’s top speed is electronically limited at 217 mph (350 km/h). Other performance numbers, such as acceleration, have not been provided.
