An Audi A4 by any other name would drive as sweet

The automaker released details of its next-generation models, which will now be called A5 instead.

The Audi A4 family of vehicles will now be called A5.

“Launching 30 years after the first Audi A4, the sharpened design language of the latest generation, now called the Audi A5, captivates with premium proportions,” Audi said of its next-generation of cars in the midsize segment.

The automaker is changing up its vehicle nomenclature, with electric vehicles utilizing even numbers and fuel-burning vehicles using odd numbers.

The first car of the company’s vehicles to receive the naming switch is the A4. It’s also the first vehicle launched on what Audi calls its Premium Platform Combustion.

In Europe, the new A5 and the more powerful S5 will be available in sedan and Avant (station wagon) form at launch. In Canada, we’re only getting the sedan, Audi Canada said.

The new cars will launch in Germany and other European countries in November with ordering starting this month. A timeline of when the new cars will be available in Canada has not been announced yet. Until then, the A4 continues.

Additionally, the current, coupe-style A5 cars will partially carry on into 2025 in Canada. Audi Canada said it is dropping the A5/S5/RS5 in the Coupe and Cabriolet body styles, but the four-door Sportback will continue.

As for the new A5, Audi said the all-new cars feature a dynamic chassis and steering design, which through various options can be differentiated between comfort and sportiness.

The new A5s are wider and longer than the outgoing A4s and come with more standard features, with Audi planning to place the new vehicles in the upper midsize segment.

The A5 will come with a 2-litre turbocharged engine while the S5 will be powered by a 3-litre turbocharged engine.

The new cars also utilize an advanced mild hybrid setup (called MHEV plus), which goes beyond what a traditional mild hybrid car can do, such as being able to be driven at low speeds and parked in purely electric mode to a limited extent. Additionally, the air conditioner can be operated while the car is stopped at an intersection and the combustion engine switches off.

“In tandem with the expansion of our all-electric portfolio, we are launching a new generation of models with efficient combustion engines. The Audi A5 family with its athletic design, completely new interior and future-proof electronics architecture will be the first. The advanced MHEV plus technology enables partially electric driving and therefore even more efficient driving,” said Audi CEO Gernot Döllner in a news release.
