Fiat could someday soon have a third vehicle in its Canadian lineup.

While the automaker hasn’t specifically said a new car is coming to the Canadian market, Fiat released early details of a new vehicle that is being studied for global markets, including North America.

The Grande Panda was shown publicly at Fiat’s 125th anniversary event held July 11 at Fiat’s Lingotto building in Turin, Italy.

Currently, Fiat only has two vehicles it sells in Canada, the 500X compact crossover, and the 500e electric car.

Fiat calls the Grande Panda a new global model. The crossover was designed in Italy and is said to use a one-of-a-kind multi-energy platform that is sustainable anywhere in the world.

“It is a strictly Italian design while choosing the best powertrain fit based on the needs of customers, wherever they might be. In short, the new model marks Fiat’s transition from local production to global range,” the automaker said in a news release.

The Grande Panda could be available in both electric and hybrid versions, and the EV variant could have a 44-kWh battery and an 83-kW e-motor and offer 320 kilometres of range.

The Grande Panda was inspired by Fiat’s Panda car from the 1980s. In true Fiat fashion, the car is relatively small, measuring 157.1 inches long, 61.8 inches high, and 69.3 inches wide.

Special attention was paid to optimize the vehicle’s space. Among those attention to details features includes half a cubic foot of storage in the dashboard, while the trunk has 12.7 cubic feet of space.

“Essentially, the Grande Panda is the ideal companion for families and today’s urban mobility as it can comfortably transport five people,” Fiat said in a news release.

“Fiat has been synonymous with social relevance over the last 125 years, offering our customers what they really need based on the times in which they are living. And our customers want iconic and affordable city cars; frugal and inclusive compacts; family mobility; commercial vehicles and, last but not the least, Abarth for everyday fun, which is exactly what Fiat offers,” said Olivier Francois, Fiat CEO and Stellantis global chief marketing officer, in a news release. “Currently we have launched Fiat’s comeback to the global mainstream based on three pillars: Italian design and development, global platform and local relevance – and the Grande Panda is the first member of our new global family. Therefore, over the next decade, we’ll have the right offer for every customer. Because the customer is at the centre of everything for us.”

While the Grande Panda was the star of the anniversary event, Fiat also premiered the first real images of two other vehicles, an SUV and a fastback, that will be part of the first generation of Fiat’s new global family of vehicles.
