The Hakone special edition of the Toyota GR86 is back for the 2025 model year, but only 30 will be sold in Canada.

Toyota Canada announced the special edition pays tribute to the Hakone Turnpike near Tokyo, Japan. Only 860 units will be produced for the North American market, and the 30 that will be available in Canada are expected to be available at dealerships in the fall of 2024.

The last time we saw the Hakone special edition was in 2020, near the end of the production run of the first generation 86.

All examples that will be sold in Canada will be available with a six-speed manual transmission.

So what is the Hakone special edition?

The car builds on the GR86’s Premium trim and adds a number of unique features.

Those include:

  • New Ridge Green exterior colour
  • Ultrasuede interior
  • 18-inch satin bronze-finished wheels
  • Colour-keyed duck-tail spoiler
  • Black accents
  • Hakone badge
  • Hakone shift knob with bronze accents

Furthermore, on the interior side, the Ultrasuede interior features sports seats with tan leather trim and stitching.

Additionally, the Hakone special edition features Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers.

All Toyota GR86 cars are powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder boxer engine with 228 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque.

All cars received some tweaks for the 2025 model year.

These tweaks include retuned shock absorbers to improve handling response and a sense of ground contact, Toyota said.

Throttle mapping has also been revised to make “blipping” easier – this is a function commonly used during heel-toe downshifts in motorsports.

Engine torque control has also been adopted to provide a more direct throttle response and linearity, which Toyota said improves ease of control at all speeds.

The electric power steering has been returned for a more responsive handling feel and an improved sense of direct contact with the road, Toyota added.

Pricing will be announced closer to vehicle availability.
