BMW has revealed its all-new 2025 X3 and the fourth-generation midsize SUV, which the automaker calls SAV (sports activity vehicle) looks to have bolder, more pronounced contours.

BMW Group Canada points out the new X3 features new exterior design language along with a modern interior and a curved display with BMW’s iDrive 9 system.

The worldwide launch of the X3 will be in the fourth-quarter of 2024.

Two trims will be available in Canada for the 2025 model year.

Base MSRP is as follows:

  • 2025 BMW X3 30 xDrive: $58,900
  • 2025 BMW X3 M50 xDrive: $74,900

You may have noticed the letter “i” has been dropped from the powertrain designation. Previously, they would have been called 30i or M50i, but that is no more. The “i” previously meant the vehicle used fuel injection.

“In future, the letter ‘i’ will only be used in the names of all-electric BMW models,” the automaker said in a news release.

The new X3 was BMW’s best-selling vehicle in 2023. X3s built for the Canadian market will be made in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

About the vehicle

BMW points out the new design language gives the X3 an “almost monolithic” appearance. The new vehicle is 34 mm longer, 29 mm wider and has a height that’s 16 mm lower than the outgoing model, which the automaker says gives it a powerful and sporty look.

Contour lighting on the new kidney grille is standard on the X3 M50 and optional on the X3 30. This lighting has a continuous line around each element of the grille.

The daytime driving lights, side marker lights, and turn signal indicators in the LED headlights are produced by L-shaped, overlapping light sources, BMW says, while full LED headlights with cornering light functions, plus blue design detailing, are optional, as are Shadowline Lights.

Powertrain

The four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines both feature 48V mild hybrid technology.

The X3 30 features a 2-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder engine with a maximum output of 255 hp between 4,700 and 6,500 rpm and peak torque of 295 lb.-ft. between1,600 and 4,500 rpm. BMW says zero to 100 km/h acceleration comes in 6.3 seconds.

The X3 M50 features a 3-litre inline-six engine has a total system output of 393 hp between 5,200 and 6,250 rpm and peak torque of 428 lb.-ft. between 1,900 and 4,800 rpm. Zero to 100 km/h is achieved in sports car-like 4.6 seconds.

BMW says the new model improves agility and cornering stability as well as long-distance comfort as the SUV now features a lower weight, increased rigidity and a wider rear track.

An optional Adaptive M suspension on the M50 model is said to sharpen agility and improve ride comfort.

The new X3 features a host of tech, including parking assistant, which is standard, and an optional parking assistant professional, which increases automated parking abilities, such as allowing the vehicle to determine the boundaries of a parking space and take into account road markings and the curb. Entering and exiting tight spaces can also be controlled from outside the vehicle with a smartphone and the My BMW App.

BMW’s Operating System 9 features latest improvements for touch and voice controls and allows for the reduction of buttons and switches inside the vehicle.

There’s also an optional head-up display.

An optional BMW Digital Premium includes features such as apps for video streaming, music from platforms like Spotify, podcasts, news, and in-car gaming, as well as other functions including BMW Maps with 3D maps, Satellite View and more.
