New Mini Cooper 5 Door launched

The automaker introduced a new Mini Cooper 3 Door earlier this year and is now introducing the 5 Door, as in four-door hatchback.

A new gasoline-powered Mini Cooper 5 Door has been introduced, joining the fifth-generation 3 Door model that launched earlier this year.

BMW Group Canada has not provided the timing of the 5 Door model’s launch, nor Canadian market details such as pricing, so we’ll just have to wait and see on those.

Here are the goods on the 5 Door, which is to say four-door hatchback.

Just like the 3 Door model, the new 5 Door receives a minimalist design, both inside and out.

Size-wise, it’s nearly identical to the outgoing generation, BMW points out, measuring 4,036 mm long, 1,744 mm wide and 1,464 mm tall. The car seats five.

The automaker says the basic principle of creating as much space as possible on a small footprint remains. The wheelbase is 72 mm longer and the body is 172 mm longer than the 3 Door model.

“Short overhangs, clear surfaces and expressive accents also give the new Mini Cooper 5 Door its unmistakable charisma,” the automaker said in a news release.

“The larger body version of the purist Mini Cooper also delivers the brand’s hallmark driving fun and agile handling.”

The 5 Door is available with two gasoline-powered engines. The standard C model has a three-cylinder engine with 156 hp and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. Zero to 100 km/h acceleration is reported at 8 seconds, and the top speed is 225 km/h.

The Cooper S has a four-cylinder engine with 204 hp and 221 lb.-ft. of torque. Standstill to 100 km/h arrives 6.8 seconds and the top speed is 242 km/h, BMW says.

The 5 Door is available in four trims, each with individual equipment options, 11 exterior colours and four exterior trims.

The exterior trims include the Essential Trim, Classic Trim, Favoured Trim and JCW Trim. Here are the descriptions of each, as provided by BMW:

  • Essential Trim: it “emphasizes the minimalist overall appearance and highlights certain functional parts such as the logo in Vibrant Silver.”
  • Classic Trim: in this trim “the roof is available in black or white, as is the Multitone roof with its unique colour gradient. The contrast with the body colour gives the Mini Cooper a particularly expressive look.”
  • Favoured Trim: on this one “the front radiator grille frame and certain design elements are finished in Vibrant Silver, further enhancing the individuality of the Mini Cooper.”
  • JCW Trim: this one “emphasizes the sporty side of the Mini Cooper 5 Door. Exclusive design features such as the striking front and rear diffusers, radiator grille surround and high-gloss black JCW logo allude to Mini’s motorsport heritage. Chili Red is available exclusively for the contrasting roof.”

The car features the Mini Operating System 9 and features a round central OLED display with a diameter of 240 mm. The OS allows all vehicle functions to be controlled by touch or voice.

BMW adds that the 5 Door features suspension and damping tuned for spirited handling, but one that allows for a high level of everyday comfort.
