Seven-seater with 1,000-plus horsepower? Rivian’s got it

The second-generation electric Rivian R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck are available with various available motor configurations, including a quad-motor setup with 1,025 hp.

There was a time, not so long ago, that 1,000 hp was reserved for the Bugattis and Koenigseggs of the world.

Now, you can hop into a family-sized SUV and comfortably seat seven while blasting from standstill to 60 mph in under three seconds thanks to Rivian, an electric vehicle manufacturer.

Rivian has updated its R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck for the 2025 model year and is offering these vehicles with various new battery and motor setups. The top of the performance line setup features a quad-motor configuration with 1,025 hp.

When using Launch Mode, the R1T pickup produces 1,198 lb.-ft. of torque and accelerates from zero to 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds, Rivian says.

In the R1S SUV, which seats seven, 60 mph arrives in 2.6 seconds.

“We continue to evolve our flagship R1 vehicles, offering quality and performance without compromise. Our revamped R1S and R1T push the technical boundaries further, creating our most capable products to date,” said RJ Scaringe, Rivian CEO and founder, in a news release.

The second-generation R1T and R1S are available in dual-, tri- and quad-motor configurations.

They also have new Large and Max battery packs available in redesigned modules that make them easier to manufacturer and service, Rivian says. These new batteries also provide an estimated driving range of up to 420 miles (675 km). The Standard pack provides an EPA-estimated 270 miles (434 km) of range.

Both vehicles make use of several features that optimize efficiency, including a new heat pump-based thermal system that provides rider comfort and range. New 22-inch aero wheels and tires reduce drag and an updated suspension with air springs is said to provide better ride comfort without compromising off-road capability.

The vehicles feature a new electrical architecture and compute platform that reduces 17 ECUs found in first generation vehicles down to seven, improving efficiency and removing of 1.6 miles (2.6 km) of wiring from each vehicle.

Rivian says these updated vehicles have a 15 per cent lower standard lifetime carbon footprint than the first generation, mostly due to manufacturing and operating efficiencies and improvements in the company’s materials supply chain.

“With about 50 per cent less CO2 emissions from manufacturing compared to model-year 2022 vehicles and other optimizations, these vehicles further Rivian’s ambition to accelerate widespread EV adoption and protect our planet for future generations,” the automaker said in the release.

Rivian provided pricing in U.S. dollars. The second-gen R1S will start at $75,900 and R1T will start at $69,900 – that’s for the dual-motor Standard models. Pricing has not been made available for the top-of-the-performance-line Quad Max model.
