British Car Day, now in its 39th year, annually draws more than 1,000 cars of all British makes and models and the 2024 event is expected to do the same.

British Car Day is set to happen Sunday, Sept. 15 at Bronte Creek Provincial Park in Oakville, just west of Toronto, and more than 9,000 spectators are expected to attend.

The event, hosted by the Toronto Triumph Club, is open to vintage, classic and current British-manufactured vehicles, including motorcycles. About 75 per cent of cars entered into last year’s event were built before 1980, with the oldest being an 1898 Beeston Quadricycle.

The 2024 event will also celebrate major anniversaries of several cars. These are:

  • 70 years – Jensen 541 and MG Magnette
  • 60 years – Sunbeam Tiger, Mini Moke and Ford Corsair
  • 50 years – Caterham Super 7

Organizers say examples of these cars will be located on Sponsor Street.

Last year’s winner of the best of show award went to Peter Brook’s 1956 Jensen 541, an example of one of these cars being celebrated.

British Car Day features 57 classes of cars and motorcycles, with three awards being handed out in each class, which are voted on by participants. There are also best of show awards, selected by judges, and long-distance awards for cars driven (not trailered) from far. Organizers expect one participating car to be driven from California this year.

“People who attend the show for the first time are in awe of the number of cars present and their owners look forward to telling visitors all about their hobby,” said British Car Day chair Dave Sims in an email.

Along with the cars, there will be about 50 vendors selling car-related things, and there will be food options as well as a DJ playing songs dating back to the ’60s and ’70s.

The cost to enter a British car into the show is $20 with pre-registration or $25 at the gate.

Spectator entry is by park admission, which costs $18 per car, or free for people who walk or bike in.

Participating cars are scheduled to arrive starting at 8 a.m.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with awards handed out from 2 to 3 p.m.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park is located at 1219 Burloak Dr. The south entrance is for non-British and spectator entry while the north entry is reserved for British car exhibitors and vendors.
