We don’t know much about Lamborghini’s successor for the Huracán, but the automaker is whetting our appetites by dropping engine details for the upcoming “Baby Lambo.”
Codenamed Lamborghini 634, the car is expected to launch sometime in 2024.
Some background: the Gallardo, which debuted in 2003, kicked off an era at Lamborghini that included a pair of supercars widely available to customers. One would be the top rung vehicle with a V12 engine (at the time that was the Murciélago) and a second, sometimes colloquially referred to as the “Baby Lambo,” would be a less expensive, yet-still-super-fast car with a V10 engine.
That upcoming “Baby Lambo” will now be powered by a twin-turbo 4-litre V8 engine and three electric motors. This multi-motor setup will be connected to the wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Here’s what Lamborghini says about the V8 engine.
It is an entirely new engine, designed at Sant’Agata Bolognese.
The maximum power from the engine will be 800 CV (789 hp) available between 9,000 and 9,750 rpm. The engine has a maximum engine speed of 10,000 rpm.
Maximum torque of 730 Nm (538 lb.-ft.) is delivered between 4,000 and 7,000 rpm.
“The twin-turbo V8 combines the high linearity of progression that made the Lamborghini V10 famous with the high power and specific torque of a new-generation turbocharged engine,” the automaker said in a news release.
The rear electric system was designed and developed for the new V8 and will be positioned between the combustion engine and the dual-clutch gearbox. The electric system includes the inverter as well as the axial electric unit.
It is capable of generating high torque and power values, with a maximum of 300 Nm (221 lb.-ft.) and 110 kW at 3,500 rpm, while keeping compact dimensions and low weight, Lamborghini said.
“Another crucial element of the design process was to define the sound, to give the new powerplant a unique and distinctive character and deliver the driver an unparalleled driving experience,” the automaker said in the release. “The characteristics of the new V8 intensify in a crescendo that at high revs reaches its peak in terms of volume and frequency content and this, in harmony with the vibrations transmitted to the chassis by the flat-plane crankshaft, creates an all-encompassing sensory experience.”
