In a move that should surprise few people, another midsize sedan is being discontinued. This one happens to be the least expensive such car available in Canada.
General Motors confirmed to this blog that the Chevrolet Malibu, Chevy’s last available sedan, is being discontinued.
The 2024 Malibu undercuts the next cheapest midsize sedan by about $1,500 in Canada. Check out our list of cheapest 2024 model year midsize sedans available in Canada here.
Canadians can still go out and buy the 2024 model year Malibu for now, while the 2025 Malibu will be available for fleet sales for part of the remainder of this year.
“As consumer car-buying habits in Canada have changed and are moving away from cars and towards crossovers and SUVs, the 2025 Chevrolet Malibu will only be offered in Canada for fleet purchase until November 2024,” GM said in an email.
The Malibu is built at GM’s Fairfax plant in Kansas City, which is being retooled for production of the new Chevrolet Bolt EV.
“As part of this transition, the Chevrolet Malibu will end production in November 2024, and the Cadillac XT4 will pause production after January 2025. Production at Fairfax will resume in late 2025, with both the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Cadillac XT4 on the same assembly line, providing GM with flexibility to respond to changes in customer demand,” GM said in the email.
The Malibu name has been used by Chevrolet since the 1960s, at first as a trim level on the Chevrolet Chevelle and later as its own model line. It was discontinued in the ’80s and then the name was brought back in 1997 and has continued to be in use since.
The current generation Malibu, the car’s ninth, has been on the market since the 2016 model year, with a mid-cycle refresh for the 2019 model year.
“Chevrolet has a broad portfolio of vehicles ranging from Trax and Trailblazer to Equinox EV and Blazer EV,” GM added in the email.
