Automobili Lamborghini has introduced a plug-in hybrid version of its SUV, this one called the Urus SE.

And not to worry, this hybrid is a powerful beast.

The SUV features a 4 L V8 engine with 620 CV (611 hp) of power and 800 Nm (590 lb.-ft.) of torque, matched to an electric powertrain with 192 CV (189 hp) and 483 Nm (356 lb.-ft.) of torque.

Combined, the system has a total output of 800 CV (789 hp).

Below the floor is a 25.9-kWh lithium-ion battery.

“The underlying mission of the project was clear: to offer state-of-the-art performance combined with the uncompromising character typical of Lamborghini’s DNA,” said chief technical officer Rouven Mohr in a news release. “The Urus SE is positioned at the top of its class in terms of being fun to drive and for its driving dynamics. It’s a vehicle that harmoniously combines different qualities: absolute comfort and at the same time performance and fun-to-drive, ensuring an experience like no other.”

Performance

Lamborghini says the SUV will sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and zero to 200 km/h in 11.2 seconds.

That’s quicker than the gasoline-only Urus S with times of 3.5 seconds and 12.5 seconds.

Top speed is 312 km/h, which is faster than the Urus S’s 305 km/h top speed.

Not only do you get bonkers performance, you can also go green, as the SUV can travel more than 60 kilometres in EV mode, the automaker says.

Design

Lamborghini used some styling concepts that were introduced in the Revuelto, as well as new headlight clusters that feature matrix LED technology.

“The design and proportions of the Urus remain incomparable and absolutely recognizable as a Lamborghini,” said Lamborghini design director Mitja Borkert in the news release. “At the same time the Urus SE delivers a highly sophisticated evolution, consistent with our new iconic and essential design philosophy, and importantly delivering an enhanced feeling of luxury together with more Ad Personam potential. We took inspiration from the Revuelto with the floating engine bonnet, achieving a very clean and muscular front design. The state-of-the art front light system integrates a new, distinctive DRL signature. The rear emphasizes a wider stance with a focus on the new diffuser and low-mounted license plates, while the rear mesh takes inspiration from Lamborghini super sports cars like the Gallardo. The interior design follows our ‘feel like a pilot’ philosophy, enhancing interaction between the driver and the digital system.”

Aerodynamics

Lamborghini says downforce is improved by 35 per cent over the Urus S thanks to a redesigned cargo compartment hatch and rear diffuser.

Aerodynamic efficiency is also improved thanks to new under-body air vents and revamped air ducts, which channel more airflow to cool the mechanical and engine components.

The inside has been redesigned with the “feel like a pilot” design DNA.

Occupants will also find a larger screen on the centre of the dashboard, measuring 12.3 inches, with a new version of the company’s human machine interface (HMI) that is said to be more intuitive and featuring updated graphics, consistent with what can be found in the Revuelto.

The driver also has a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The designers also focused on air vents, anodized aluminum trim elements, and new panel, seat and dashboard coverings. Lamborghini says the mechanical pushbutton panel gives a more tactile feel.

Wheels and tires

The Urus SE introduces new 23-inch Galanthus rims that come standard with Pirelli P Zero tires, and customers can choose from 21- to 23-inch P Zero tires, depending on the comfort/sportiness they are going for.

For the winter, the SUV has available Scorpion Winter 2 tires, which have feature Pirelli Elect technology to enhance the characteristics of the electrified SUV, Lamborghini says.

Driving modes

Various driving modes can be selected, from comfort to sporty, to full-out speed (these include Strada, Sport, Corsa, Neve, Sabbia and Terra). There’s also Recharge mode (selectable in Strada, Sport, Corsa and Neve), which recharges up to 80 per cent of the battery while maintaining optimal performance, the automaker says. Depending on the drive mode selected, air springs can adjust ground clearance, with a traveling range of 15 mm and 75 mm when the lifting system is activated.

Vehicle availability dates and pricing have not yet been announced.
