You’ll soon be able to get an electric version of the G-Wagen.
Mercedes-Benz Canada announced the G-Class is getting an electric variant, called the G 580 with EQ Technology.
The 2025 model is expected to arrive in Canada in the second half of 2024. It will initially be available in Canada in the Edition One special edition, which features expanded standard equipment and unique design elements.
Mercedes-Benz recently updated the G-Class, including its AMG variant, and has now added the electric version. Driving range on a single charge is yet to be announced.
Here are some highlights of the G 580.
Powertrain
It features a 116-kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated into the ladder frame, which ensures a low centre of gravity. It is housed in a torsion-resistant casing to protect it from water and dirt.
The G 580 is powered by four individually controlled electric motors located near the wheels. Combined, power output is 579 hp and 859 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s two more horses and more than 200 lb.-ft. of torque than the gasoline-powered Mercedes-AMG G 63.
The automaker says the SUV can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds.
The G 580 is the first Mercedes-Benz Group vehicle with individual-wheel drive. Each electric motor produces 145 hp and drive torque is intelligently distributed to optimize traction.
The electric SUV also uses torque vectoring to generate virtual differential locks, which makes it possible to precisely meter torque to each individual wheel. Mercedes-Benz says as torque builds exactly where needed within fractions of a second, the SUV holds a clean, confident line, even on the most challenging terrain.
Off-roading prowess
The SUV features a ladder frame design, selectable low-range off-road gear reduction, independent front suspension and a solid rear axle.
Mercedes-Benz says this contributes to the electric G-Wagen’s off-road capabilities. It even surpasses the G 550 and AMG G 63 in fording depth, the automaker says.
Highlights of off-road capabilities include:
- Ability to climb up to a 100 per cent grade on suitable surfaces
- 250 millimetres of ground clearance between axles
- Maximum fording depth of 850 millimetres
- High stability on lateral slopes of up to 35 degrees
- 32-degree approach angle, 30.7-degree departure angle and 20.3-degree breakover angle
Other features

A G-Roar sound experience provides driving sound, also “aura,” as Mercedes-Benz calls it as well as various “event” sounds.
A slightly raised hood, new A-pillar trim, a spoiler lip on the roof strip and flared rear wheel arches improve aerodynamics and interior aeroacoustics, the automaker says.
The SUV comes with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system featuring a driver display and central touchscreen multimedia display, both measuring 12.3 inches.
Driver safety assistance features are numerous, including active distance assist, active steering assist, active brake assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane keep assist, active blind-spot assist, attention assist, a parking package with 360-degree camera, active parking assist, pre-safe preventive occupant protection system, traffic sign assist and more.
