Another midsize sedan is going the way of the dodo as Subaru Canada confirmed it will be discontinuing the Legacy following the 2024 model year.
“The Legacy has long been a staple in our lineup, debuting in 1989 and later serving as the foundation to the now beloved Subaru Outback,” Subaru Canada said via email. “Though the Legacy is the longest-running Subaru model line, its discontinuation reflects market shifts from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers and Subaru’s transition to electrified and fully electric vehicles.”
All Canadian Legacy cars were built at Subaru’s Lafayette, Indiana plant.
Over in the U.S. market, the Legacy will be discontinued following the 2025 model year, according to media reports.
The Outback, which is mentioned in the Subaru Canada email, originally started as a lifted Legacy wagon and later became its own model.
Subaru is now turning its focus on producing more electric vehicles.
“Including the Solterra EV, which debuted in the 2023 model year, Subaru Corporation, the parent company of Subaru Canada, Inc., previously announced it would produce eight EV models by the 2028 calendar year,” the Subaru Canada email continued.
The outgoing Legacy is powered by a 2.4 L turbocharged direct injection Subaru boxer engine with 260 hp.
Starting price, including freight and fees (taxes extra), is $45,874.
