One could say the latest iteration of the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is the flagship of the flagship.

Mercedes-Benz Canada announced the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe S E Performance will be powered by a hybrid powertrain with 805 hp combined and 1,047 lb.-ft. of torque. The 805 hp powertarin is also available in the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance.

Mercedes has been dropping details of different variants of its latest-generation GT Coupe – which is available as an AMG model only – over the past few months, first introducing us to the GT 55 and 63 variants and then adding the GT 43 featuring a bodacious 2 L engine pumping out more than 400 hp.

So what motivates the S E Performance variant?

The car comes with a handcrafted AMG 4 L V8 biturbo engine at the front and an electric motor on the rear axle, with bits inspired by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team’s hybrid race cars.

There’s a 400-volt AMG high performance battery featuring innovative cooling, which powers the electric motor with 94 hp of continuous output and 201 hp of peak output. The battery is designed for fast power delivery and draw, rather than the longest possible range, the automaker says.

The car can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, Mercedes says, which is the fastest acceleration of any AMG series production model. Zero to 60 mph comes in even quicker.

“From zero to 60 in 2.7 seconds – no AMG series model has ever sprinted that fast before. Given these values, it was clear that the world premiere of the new AMG GT 63 S E Performance had to take place on the sidelines of a Formula 1 race. Our four-litre V8, combined with the performance hybrid system, makes the vehicle the top model in our GT family. The GT 63 S E Performance combines enormous performance with a very dynamic driving experience and thus creates pure goosebumps. At the same time, the vehicle offers extensive equipment options and high-quality materials, making it one of the most exclusive performance coupes on the market,” said Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG, in a news release.

The power is sent to the wheels via an AMG Speedshift MCT 9G automatic transmission and fully variable all-wheel drive. The top speed is electronically limited at 320 km/h.
