Non-AMG variant Mercedes-Benz G 550 features six-cylinder turbo engine with 443 hp and both come with mild hybrid technology

Mercedes-Benz has updated its G-Class (often called G-Wagen) with an all-new model for 2025.

Whether you opt for the standard model or the hyped up AMG variant, you’ll get tons of power with mild hybrid technology.

Here’s what you get with both vehicles, at a glance.

Mercedes-Benz G 550

The off-road SUV remains boxy and can’t be mistaken for anything other than a G-Class.

The SUV can handle lateral slopes of up to 35 degrees, 31 degrees on approach and 30 degrees on departure (without tow hitch). It has 24.1 cm (9.5 inches) of ground clearance between the axles and can ford in depths of 70 cm (27.6 inches), Mercedes-Benz Canada says.

The company says the new G-Class features adaptive adjustable damping for more control during on- and off-road driving.

The engine is electrified with a 48-volt mild hybrid setup, to improve performance and efficiency.

The 3 L six-cylinder turbocharged engine produces 443 hp and 413 lb.-ft. of torque. The 48-vold integrated starter generator provides support at lower engine speeds with an additional 20 hp and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is connected to a permanent all-wheel-drive system via a 9G-Tronic automatic transmission.

The transfer case sends 40 per cent of the drive torque to the front wheels and 60 per cent to the rear.

On the interior, owners will find with find an MBUX infotainment system with central multimedia display with touchscreen, and a host of comfort features.

There’s a choice of Nappa leather upholstery, with expanded choices over the outgoing model, a Burmester 3D surround sound system with an illuminated satellite loudspeaker in the headliner.

Cup holders are now climate-controlled, there’s wireless charging and there’s an MBUX high-end rear seat entertainment system. Rear seat passengers can have two integrated 11.6-inch touch displays for watching movies, browsing the internet, access trip information and more.

Keyless-Go is standard, which allows the doors and tailgate to be locked and unlocked by pressing the button on the door handle, even when the key is not in hand.

An optional dashcam can film the traffic in front of the vehicle and record the time and speed.

There’s a host of safety features, including active steering assist, active emergency stop assist, route-based speed adaptation, active park asisst, and a whole lot more.

The all-new G-Class combines an outstanding driving experience with a state-of-the-art digital experience,” said Markus Schäfer, chief technology officer, in a news release.

Mercedes-AMG G 63

The AMG variant features a 4 L V8 biturbo engine, which is said to have gained power and reduced fuel consumption over the outgoing model. This motor produces 577 hp and 627 lb.-ft. of torque and features the 48-volt integrated starter generator, which provides support at lower engine speeds with an additional 20 hp and 148 lb.-ft. of torque.

Mercedes-Benz says the G 63 can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds.

The AMG’s engine is connected to the wheels via an AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission.

The AMG features a unique bumper with three vertical louvres in front of the air intakes. Standard adaptive multi-beam LED headlights feature 84 individually controllable high-performance LEDs. The taillights are also LEDs.

There’s an AMG crest on the hood.
