There are a number of reasons for keeping your vehicle clean in winter, but the main reason is to wash away salt

Should you wash your car in the winter?

The simple answer is yes.

It may seem odd to do so as the water you pour on your vehicle can cause doors to freeze shut, but you should still do it. It may just be best to do it on milder days, especially when temperature is above 0 C.

Here’s why you should keep your ride clean.

Dirty snow, mud and dust tend to build up on your car in the winter. It’s unsightly, gets on your clothes and on the inside of your car. But that’s not the worst of it.

It is the road salt, which sticks to your vehicle, that needs to be washed away most of all, as it will cause your car to rust.

Salt is corrosive to metal, and when it is combined with oxygen and water, its ability to corrode is even greater.

So wash your car and don’t forget the underside where that corrosive white stuff likes to hang around unseen.

And a neat little fact for you: according to the Canadian government website, Canada uses about five million tonnes of road salt each year, in order to keep our roads clear of snow and ice and us road users safe.
