BMW Group Canada released details of the 2025 Z4 M40i roadster, which will be now available with a six-speed manual transmission.
The Z4 had been available with an automatic only since BMW joined forces to Toyota to co-develop the Z4 and Supra cars. Toyota added the manual to the Supra for the 2023 model year, and now BMW is doing so for the Z4.
The manual transmission is available as a no-cost option on the M40i variant of the Z4, a car with a 382 hp twin-turbo inline-six engine. BMW says the car with the manual transmission will sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. Reported sprint times for the automatic version are 4.1 seconds.

The base model of the Z4, the 30i variant, which features a 255 hp engine, continues with the automatic transmission-only setup.
BMW says the Z4 M40i with the manual transmission features a retuned chassis and comes with M light-ally wheels measuring 19 inches in the front and 20 inches in the rear. The staggered wheel sizes only come with the manual transmission option. There are also special design features to the exterior and interior with the manual option.
The car comes with a free-revving 3 L engine producing 382 hp between 5,800 and 6,500 rpm and 369 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,800 and 5,000 rpm.
The manual gearbox is a BMW transmission that has been modified specifically for the M40i’s engine output.
“The direct flow of power between engine and transmission combined with the driver’s central involvement in gear changes reinforces the visceral bond between driver and vehicle. A precisely defined shift action enables the gears to be changed swiftly and intuitively,” the company said in a news release.
The car’s top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
The manual version gets distinct design features including special badging and specially designed flaps to manage the airflow around the rear wheel arches.

For 2025, the Z4 gets two new exterior colours in Canada, including the San Remo Green Metallic on all trims, and the Individual Frozen Deep Green Metallic on the M40i only.
On the inside, there are five shades of Vernasca leather upholstery to choose from. Exclusive to the manual transmission variant of the car is the Cognac with unique black M piping complemented by a black high-gloss interior colour scheme.
BMW Group Canada says the 2025 model will launch globally in March 2024. Pricing was not made available.
