Porsche Macan will be company’s first all-electric SUV

Porsche sold more than 800,000 first-generation Macan vehicles worldwide since the model launched in 2014

The Porsche Macan is going electric.

The company announced the second generation of its popular sport utility vehicle will be all-electric.

“Our aim is to offer the sportiest model in its segment with the all-electric Macan,” said Jörg Kerner, vice president, product line Macan, in a Jan. 25 news release.

Like with Porsche’s gasoline-powered vehicles, the Macan comes with several powertrain variants.

The Macan 4 produces up to 300 kW (402 hp), and has a combined electric range of 516 to 613 kilometres. Porsche says the Macan 4 will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 220 km/h.

The Macan Turbo has up to 470 kW (630 hp), and a combined electric range of 518 to 591 kilometres. Porsche says it will hit 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of 260 km/h.

Aerodynamics

The company says the new SUV has aerodynamics optimized for range, featuring active and passive elements. It has a drag coefficient of 0.25, making it one of the most streamlined SUVs available, the company said.

There’s an adaptive rear spoiler, active cooling flaps on the front air intakes and flexible covers on the fully sealed underbody. Air curtains below the headlight module and the low-slung front end are said to optimize airflow. In the rear, lateral tear-off edges and a louvred diffuser support aerodynamic efficiency, Porsche said.

Battery

The lithium-ion battery sits in the underbody and has a gross capacity of 100 kWh, of which 95 kWh can be actively used. Porsche says its 800-volt architecture supports fast charging. It can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 21 minutes at a suitable fast-charging station.

When charged at a 400-volt charging station, a high-voltage switch in the battery enables bank charging by effectively splitting the 800-volt battery into two, enabling efficient charging at up to 135 kW.

AC charging is also possible at up to 11 kW.

Porsche says the new models will be delivered to customers in the second half of 2024.

Since 2014, Porsche has sold more than 800,000 Macan vehicles worldwide.
