2024 Mazda MX-5 receives design updates, Alexa integration, new LSD

Mazda Canada announced pricing and key changes for its rear-wheel-drive sports car

Mazda Canada announced pricing for its MX-5 for the 2024 model year, along with some key updates for the rear-wheel-drive sports car.

Pricing begins at $34,900 for the soft-top variant and $41,900 for the MX-5 RF hard-top model. The listed manufacturer’s suggested retail price does not include freight charges, taxes and other fees. Retailers set the actual price.

All models of the MX-5 (still often called the Miata) come with a Skyactiv-G 2 L four-cylinder engine with 181 hp at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic is optional on most trim levels.

For 2024, the car got some updates.

Performance updates

The MX-5 is receiving an updated electric power-assisted steering system and changes to the electric assist calibration through new software. Mazda says this will result on smoother steering action with a more defined “on-centre” feel, improving highway cruising and offering more precision during hard cornering.

On the GS-P models and above, the car gets a new Asymmetric limited slip differential.

“This lightweight, compact, and highly durable conical clutch LSD has been tuned to offer a more progressive locking action as torque is applied thanks to a cam mechanism which allows for different ramp angles on acceleration and deceleration,” Mazda Canada said in a news release.

This new LSD is said to improve precision on initial turn in and ability to put the power down effortlessly on corner exit.

Appearance updates

The car gets new bumpers, updated headlights that include new LED daytime running lights, new LED taillights and new wheel designs.

A new exterior colour, Aero Grey Metallic, has been added, said to offer a cool tone to contrast the car’s dark trims and wheels.

On the inside, the centre console gets extra padding for improved comfort.

Tech updates

The interior gets a larger 8.8-inch infotainment display, which adds touch functionality when using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

This new display is paired with Alexa integration, which adds hands-free commands for things such as HVAC, radio and other features. The system can also connect to your smart home devices and control them remotely.
