Fiat 500 returning to Canada, this time as an electric car

Fiat 500e has an estimated range of 240 km, and a total charge time of 4 hours and 15 minutes with a Level 2 charger

Fiat is bringing back its cute two-door car, but this time it will be available as an electric vehicle only.

The Fiat 500e will arrive in Canada for the 2024 model year. The gasoline-powered Fiat 500 was discontinued in Canada at the end of 2019.

The four-seater is Stellantis’ first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) in North America. Stellantis is the parent company of Fiat.

Stellantis says the 500e is slightly wider and longer than the previous internal combustion engine 500. The new car is 3,631 centimetres long and 1,883 centimetres wide (with mirrors).

The 500e has an estimated range of 240 kilometres, and a total charge time of four hours and 15 minutes with a Level 2 charger.

Five minutes of charging time with a Level 3 85-kW fast charger will be enough for up to 50 km of range, Stellantis says.

“Fiat is taking on BEVs in a way only the Italian brand can, combining ‘La Dolce Vita’ spirit of an icon with a mission of sustainability and zero emissions,” said Olivier Francois, FIAT CEO and global CMO at Stellantis, in a Dec. 6 news release. “The 2024 500e is a modern, tech-forward take on a beloved classic, delivering a host of new safety features, while remaining fun to drive and true to its roots. Try not to smile when you drive this car.”

The car is also a modern take on a classic. The company says Fiat enthusiasts will see interior design cues that pay homage to the original 500 from 1957.

“Fiat enthusiasts will immediately recognize the dashboard insert, rounded cluster and two-spoke steering wheel,” the company said in the news release.

But old school meets new school in the 500e, as the new car will come with a 10.25-inch centre screen and a seven-inch digital gauge cluster.

The driver’s seat also has six-way adjustability and both front seats are heated.

Stellantis says the vehicle will first be available at dealerships in Quebec and British Columbia in early 2024, before it becomes available in the rest of the country.

The starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $39,995, plus $2,095 destination. Government electric vehicle rebates are available.
