Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance packs 805 hp

The most powerful SL in the company’s history is motivated by a hybrid powertrain featuring a 4 L V8 biturbo engine paired with a 201 hp electric motor

The good folks in Affalterbach, Germany aren’t messing about. They’ve built the most powerful SL yet and the numbers are stratospheric.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL 63 E Performance, as this latest SL is being called, features a hybrid powertrain with 805 hp and up to 1,047 lb. ft. of torque.

Mercedes says the car will accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds.

The latest SL is expected to launch in Canada in late 2024 as a 2025 model.

How does Mercedes get such bonkers output?

The SL comes with a handcrafted AMG 4 L V8 biturbo engine paired with an AMG electric drive motor. The electric motor pumps out a maximum 201 hp and is integrated with an electrically shifted two-speed transmission and limited-slip rear differential.

A high-performance battery inspired by Formula 1 hybrid race cars is located above the rear axle. It allows 94 hp of continuous output and 201 hp peak output. The battery is intended for fast power delivery rather than the longest possible range, the company says.

A high-tech direct cooling system keeps the battery at a consistent temperature, which improves performance, service life and safety. Because the battery is always in the optimum temperature, recuperation can be optimized. Normally, a battery heats up at high recuperation, but in the SL, the battery, thanks to the high-tech cooling system, can be charged more frequently. In this case, recuperation can begin the moment the driver takes their foot off the gas pedal, or on steep descents, the system can work like an engine brake while charging the battery.

And did we mention this is a plug-in hybrid? You can also charge up the battery at home when you’re not driving the car.

“The SL has always been an icon in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. The latest version of the legendary roadster transfers this status into the future,” said Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG, in a news release. “With this unique concept, we offer our customers not only superior performance but also the option of all-electric driving. Extensive equipment options and the high-quality materials used also make the SL one of the most exclusive roadsters on the market – a real dream car.”
