Next-gen Mercedes-AMG GT 63 can reach 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds

Second generation of Mercedes’ flagship GT Coupe to be available at Canadian dealerships in first half of 2024

The second generation of the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe promises to be bold, fast and luxurious.

Mercedes-Benz has released details of the next-gen flagship car, which will be available at Canadian dealerships in the first half of 2024.

At launch, the new 2+2 coupe will be available as the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 55 4MATIC+ Coupe and the GT 63 4MATIC+ Coupe.

For those not familiar with Mercedes’ naming convention, the company starts off with Mercedes-Benz; the high-performance variants are branded Mercedes-AMG, and the ultra-lux models get the Mercedes-Maybach branding. The GT Coupe is Mercedes-AMG only.

The GT 55 and GT 63 both come with a handcrafted AMG 4 L V8 biturbo engine. Other engine variants will be added to the GT Coupe later.

In the GT 55 model, the engine produces 469 hp and 516 lb. ft. of torque, and the car will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 295 km/h, the company says.

In the GT 63, the engine pumps out 577 hp and 590 lb. ft. of torque. It accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, and has a top speed of 315 km/h. The extra power come courtesy of higher boost pressure and greater airflow to the engine along with modified engine software, Mercedes-Benz says.

Both models feature AMG’s performance fully variable all-wheel drive system, which is capable of distributing power 50:50 to front and rear wheels to simply sending all the power to the rear wheels.

The GT Coupe also gets AMG’s Speedshift MCT 9G transmission, a multi-clutch transmission with a wet start-off clutch. The company says the wet start-off clutch replaces the torque converter, which reduces weight and “optimizes the response to commands from the accelerator pedal, especially during acceleration and load changes.”

The Coupe also comes with AMG’s active ride control suspension with roll stabilization. The company says the system improves the vehicle’s cornering by actively reducing the loss of camber (the angle of the wheel) as well as improves the comfort of the ride.

The GT Coupe comes with a lot of go-fast goodies, but it’s also a luxury vehicle.

For example, you can have yours with an optional Burmester sound system that delivers up to 1,170 watts of sound.

Electronically adjustable AMG sports seats are designed for comfort and lateral support. Both front seats have available inflatable air cushions and three massage programs.

Buyers can select from upholstery options, such as single- and two-tone Nappa leather.

The flat-bottom steering wheel is also wrapped in Nappa leather or, if you’d prefer, Nappa leather/microfibre.

If you want to know how your driving is on the racetrack, there’s AMG Track Pace, software that can record more than 80 vehicle specific data, such as speed, acceleration, steering angle, 10 times per second. A digital screen can display up to four parameters at a time live. The system will also give you lap and sector times.

The GT Coupe’s architecture is made of aluminum space frame combined with a self-supporting structure. It’s all brand new to the second generation.

Prices for the new GT Coupe weren’t made immediately available. The outgoing GT 53 four-door starts at $136,200.
