And the award for the most sought-after vehicle in Canada by car thieves goes to …
The Honda CR-V.
That’s according to the Équité Association, which has released its top 10 most stolen vehicles in Canada list for 2022.
This is the second year in a row the Honda CR-V took the top spot. The vehicle’s most stolen model year was the 2020.
Additionally, Équité Association, a non-profit working to eradicate insurance crime on behalf of the insurance industry, says auto thefts reached historical highs in 2022, increasing by 48 per cent in Ontario and 50 per cent in Quebec.
“Vehicles are being stolen by both domestic and international criminal organizations, with proceeds funding domestic drug trafficking, and international terrorism,” the organization said in a Nov. 14 news release.
“The auto theft problem in our country is only getting worse,” said Bryan Gast, vice president of Investigative Services at Équité Association, in the news release. “Organized crime continues to look to Canada as a source nation for stolen vehicles where the financial reward is high and the risk of prosecution is low.”
So, here’s the list of most stolen vehicles, according to Équité Association:
- Honda CR-V
- RAM 1500 series
- Ford F-150 series
- Lexus RX series
- Toyota Highlander
- Honda Civic
- Jeep Grand Cherokee
- Land Rover Range Rover
- Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra 1500 series
- Jeep Wrangler
The organization says Canada’s private auto insurers paid out $1.2 billion in theft claims in 2022, which in turn impacts how much Canadians pay for auto insurance.
