Ford adding California Special package to 2024 Mustang GT

Company preparing to celebrate Mustang’s 60th anniversary with Rave Blue detailing, along with other features

Ahead of the Mustang’s 60th anniversary, Ford has announced it is bringing back the California Special package.

It will be available on the 2024 Mustang GT fastback coupe and convertible models.

For those not in the know, the Mustang debuted in April 1964. The first time the California Special package was offered on a Mustang was in 1968, and it has been used several times in recent years.

For the 2024 model, the California Special adds some bold blue accents to the exterior and interior of the vehicle. Ford calls it Rave Blue.

The exterior accents are added to the wheels, nostril intakes on the front grille and body side graphics. It is meant to accentuate the sculpted lines of the all-new Mustang.

The California Special is available with two 19-inch wheel options, the standard Carbonized Gray wheels have a GT/CS pad-printed logo in Rave Blue, while the optional Performance Pack wheel combines a machined face with Rave Blue pockets.

On the inside of the car, California Special drivers will find special detailing, with perforated Navy Pier upholstery and Ebony Black leather covers the seats, and dual-colour contrast stitching with Raptor Blue and Metal Gray threads that extend to the dash and doors. It’s also available for the steering wheel and centre console. A California Special IP badge and GT/CS floor mats round out the interior changes.

“The original California Special package was geared toward California’s optimistic and carefree driving culture. We’re refocusing on those elements for the 2024 Mustang GT California Special, which brings vibrant style that looks as at home on Colorado Boulevard as it does on the Pacific Coast Highway,” said Mustang brand manager Joe Bellino in a Nov. 9 news release. “Rave Blue is such a distinct and exciting colour, it really does make the California Special stand out not only from other Mustang models, but from previous California Special models.”

The California Special will debut Nov. 16 at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The California Special package adds $2,595 (Canadian) to the price of a Mustang GT Premium. Mustang GT Premium pricing starts at $56,595 for the fastback and $62,395 for the convertible.
