Honda has announced it is reviving the Civic Hybrid for the Canadian and U.S. markets, and the cars will be built in Ontario and Indiana.

Production is set to begin in spring 2024.

The hybrid version of the popular compact car, available as either sedan or hatchback, will begin with the 2025 model. The previous hybrid version of the Civic was last sold in Canada in 2015.

Honda anticipates the hybrid model will represent more than 40 per cent of all Civic sales in North America.

The new Civic Hybrid will be built in two North American plants. The lead plant, the Honda of Canada Mfg. (HCM) facility in Alliston, will produce the sedan version of the car. Alliston is a community in New Tecumseth, a town of just more than 40,000 people a little more than an hour’s drive from Toronto.

The second Civic Hybrid manufacturing facility will be in Greensburg, a small city in Indiana. Both plants already support Honda CR-V Hybrid production, Honda said.

“Our HCM associates are extremely proud to be named the lead North America plant for the new, built in Canada, Civic Hybrid sedan,” said Yoshiyuki Nakazawa, general manager and executive vice president, HCM, in a news release.

How it’s powered

Honda says the Civic Hybrid will be propelled by its two-motor hybrid-electric system.

This system recently received a Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems award for the 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid.

Honda says the two-motor system offers a responsiveness for a sportier feel as well as a relaxed driving environment at highway speeds.

Alliston facility

Alliston’s Honda of Canada Mfg. recently celebrated building its six millionth Civic.

The HCM began producing vehicles in 1986, has a capacity to build 400,000 vehicles annually, which are sold in Canada and exported to the U.S., and employs more than 4,000 people. The HCM announced last year it would invest $1.38 billion over six years to upgrade its plant to support Honda’s global electrification and carbon neutrality goals.
