Unifor members have voted to ratify a deal with General Motors, the union announced.

The three-year collective agreement covers 4,300 workers at the Oshawa assembly plant, St. Catharines powertrain plant and Woodstock parts distribution centre.

“I am proud of our members at General Motors for their solidarity throughout their brief but decisive strike action and for ratifying this contract that contains life-changing improvements,” said Unifor national president Lana Payne in an Oct. 15 news release.

The strike action, which happened Tuesday, Oct. 10, lasted about 12 hours, and ended when the two sides reached a tentative agreement. The agreement was ratified with an 80.5 per cent approval vote from Unifor members.

The union says the new agreement speeds up the time for new workers to reach the top of their pay grid. Workers will now reach the top of their pay grid in four years, not eight.

There are also wage increases for workers, with a 20 per cent pay hike for production workers and 25 per cent for skilled trades workers.

Additionally, hundreds of temporary part-time positions will be converted to permanent full-time positions.

The three-year agreement expires Sept. 20, 2026.
